Principal Civil Engineer - Land Development

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Civil Engineer to lead and grow our Land Development team in Wellington.
While our office is located in Wellington CBD, we are open to candidates based across the wider Wellington and Wairarapa region, with flexible working arrangements available to support how and where you work best.
Working alongside some of HG’s leading experts, you’ll play a key leadership role across land development projects, including largescale residential, commercial, and industrial developments. You’ll lead complex projects, build and strengthen relationships, and contribute to growing capability and presence in the region.
Key responsibilities
Provide technical and project leadership across land development projects, ensuring high quality, compliant, and efficient civil engineering outcomes.
Oversee the preparation and review of design reports, technical specifications, calculations, tender documentation, and construction drawings.
Lead and review civil designs using Civil 3D and/or 12D, providing oversight and assurance across project teams.
Manage project delivery, including scope, programme, budget, and risk, ensuring projects are delivered to a high standard.
Provide technical input during construction phases, including site inspections and responding to contractor and stakeholder queries.
Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, councils, iwi, contractors, and project partners.
Contribute to business development, including identifying opportunities, supporting bids and proposals, and strengthening client relationships.
Lead, mentor, and develop engineers and designers, lifting internal capability
About you
We’re looking for an experienced technical leader or an ambitious up and comer who is passionate about delivering high quality urban development outcomes and growing people, projects, and client relationships. Our ideal candidate will have:
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field.
CPEng is an advantage or working towards chartership within 1 – 2 years.
12+ years’ New Zealand based experience in land development within multidisciplinary consulting environments.
Strong experience with Civil 3D and/or 12D and reviewing others’ design work.
In-depth knowledge of local council standards, consenting processes, and regulatory frameworks.
Proven leadership capability, with experience mentoring others and influencing project and client outcomes.
Strong communication, relationship building, and self-management skills.
