About the role
Our Transportation team partners with local and central government, developers, and private sector clients across Aotearoa to deliver transport engineering solutions that help shape connected, resilient communities.
As a Principal Transport Engineer, you'll provide technical, project, and client leadership across a diverse portfolio of transport projects, ranging from urban development and infrastructure improvements through to strategic transport initiatives.
A key focus of this role will be leading HG’s relationship with Auckland Transport through our position as a lead panellist on Auckland Transport's Transportation Engineering Professional Services (TEPS) panel. You'll work closely with Auckland Transport stakeholders, lead the delivery of TEPS projects, and contribute to the continued success of the panel partnership.
You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of transport planners, civil engineers, urban designers, surveyors, and project managers while supporting the growth and development of our transport engineering capability.
Key responsibilities include:
Lead the delivery of transport engineering projects across the full project lifecycle, from investigation and business case development through to design, construction support, and project closeout.
Act as a trusted advisor to Auckland Transport, local authorities, developers, and other key clients.
Lead Harrison Grierson's engagement with Auckland Transport through the TEPS panel, managing key client relationships and overseeing the successful delivery of TEPS projects.
Manage complex projects, ensuring scope, programme, budget, quality, and client expectations are achieved.
Lead work-winning activities, including strategic tender submissions, proposals, client engagement, and business development initiatives, to secure new projects and support the growth of the transportation business.
Provide technical leadership across transport engineering projects including feasibility studies, scheme assessments, transport infrastructure design, road safety initiatives, and multidisciplinary urban development projects.
Review and provide quality assurance for technical outputs and design deliverables.
Mentor and develop transport engineers and contribute to the growth of technical capability across the wider team.
Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making within the Transportation team and broader business.
About you.
Our ideal candidate will have:
A relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status, or eligibility to obtain it.
12+ years' experience delivering transport engineering projects, ideally within a consultancy environment or across both local government and consultancy settings.
Experience working with Auckland Transport's Transportation Engineering Professional Services (TEPS) framework, or delivering work through comparable public sector professional services panels.
Strong technical experience across transport infrastructure, roading, traffic engineering, intersection design, corridor improvements, safety projects, or related disciplines.
Proven experience leading complex projects and multidisciplinary project teams.
Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at senior levels.
Demonstrated success in building and maintaining client relationships, preparing proposals, and supporting business growth.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide technical leadership and influence both internal and external stakeholders.
